Why Latin America?

Hands-Latin-America_edited.png

Latinos are one of the largest and fastest growing racial/ethnic groups in the United States, yet they are underrepresented in clinical research studies. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), only 4% of participants in clinical trials are of Hispanic/Latino origin, despite representing 18% of the US population.

Studies have shown that this underrepresentation can result in health disparities, as treatments may not be effective or safe for diverse populations. For example, a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that Latino participants in clinical trials were less likely to receive standard treatments compared to non-Latino participants, and that this was associated with poorer survival rates.

There are several reasons why Latinos should participate in clinical trials, including:

Access to new treatments: Clinical trials provide an opportunity for participants to receive treatments that may not yet be widely available.

Contribute to medical research: By participating in clinical trials, Latinos can help advance medical knowledge and improve health outcomes for their community.

Receive specialized care: Participants in clinical trials receive close monitoring and specialized care from medical professionals.

Benefit from improved treatments: The results of clinical trials can lead to the development of new and improved treatments for all patients.

Overall, it is important for Latinos to be well represented in clinical trials to ensure that new treatments and interventions are effective and safe for diverse populations.
